Week 5 - making our biomes for geography

Week 4

Another very busy week! The children have nearly completed their Just So stories, they have used the ideas of Rudyard Kipling's writing really well, with poetry, repetition and fabulous imagination. In maths, we have continued with our multiplication and division. The children have really persevered with their learning and have occasionally fallen into the learning pit, but have worked really hard to climb out of it. We made our own habitats in science looking at oceans, forest, desert and polar. The children researched how animals adapt to their surroundings. Geography has seen us investigating biomes and ecosystems around the world, we hope to make our own ecosystem this afternoon. In PE, we have played cage ball, this led to a lot of discussion about teamwork and interpretation of rules. In guided reading we have started to read our new book Peter Pan. We are really looking forward to Science day on Monday.

Week 2

It was so lovely to catch up with most of you at parents' consultations, it's just fabulous to be able to share your child's work with you. In maths we have continued multiplication and division, all children have really persevered this week. We have been unpicking the Just So Story 'How the rhino got his skin'. I look forward to seeing what animals they decide to narrate a story about. We had sometime outside during science this week, discovering habitats around the school grounds. We shared a book called Bottled in guided reading this week, it's a rhyming picture book about emotions. The book opened up some deep thinking from all children, they then went on to make their own rhyming verse which could be included in the book. The verses they produced were incredible, comedic, witty, and also thought provoking. PE this week has seen quite a contrast between African dance and handball, but both were fun! Have a great weekend.

Week 1

Welcome back! It has been an amazing week in Swallowtails with all the children so excited for World Book Day. Miss Higson has returned to Swallowtails, so we are very happy to have her back in class. In Swallowtails we are working to improve our handwriting and editing skills, so we have started a small sentence task during our early morning work. We have all been thrilled with the ideas and imagination demonstrated by all the children, just from looking at an image. Multiplication using concrete resources and grid arrays in maths has been our focus, with all children progressing from dot arrays. We completed reading our School Library Service Book Awards books, with a final vote taking place. The winning book in Swallowtails was............... Ocean Life - Endangered Species. In Geography we are trying to answer the question, what makes a country rich? All children had really incredible answers which were not just related to money and wealth. They discussed education, health, safety and crime, area of land owned, farming and industry. It was a truly fascinating discussion. As you will have hopefully seen, World Book day was a huge success and it was fun to have such amazing visitor to class; Anne of Green Gables, Horrid Henry, Marie Currie, The BFG and so many others.
