Summer 2

This term we will be exploring the enquiry queston – Do all artists paint?

We begin this half term with an Art day where we will apply all of the skills we learnt during the previous half term to create our art project for the Southampton City Art Gallery. We will be using what we have learnt in Science and linking it with our thoughts on climate change to create some collaborative collages of flower, plants and trees. During this half term we will be focussing on the human body and exercise and in PE we will be preparing for sports day and telling stories through movement. In Music we will be using precussion to create rhythmical patterns and expressing our feelings towards different pieces of music.

Visit from the author Lu Fraser

On Monday Skippers and Admirals had a very special visit from an author called Lu Fraser. Lu shared with us one of her favourite books called “The Witchling’s Wish”. As Lu read it to us, she displayed all of the beautiful illustrations on the board. Without giving too much away, Lu asked us to make a potion for a wishing spell just like the Witchling does in the book. We had to add cobwebs, lizards and a number of other things into a cauldron to make our potion. However, when we cast our magic spell over the cauldron nothing happened. We were hoping to make a new friend with our spell, and we were very sad that it hadn’t worked. We soon realised that all you need to make a friend is kindness, a big heart and remembering to think about others, not just ourselves. At the end Lu very kindly gave us two signed copies of her books! Thank you to Lu for coming to visit us, we had a wonderful time!

The Gingerbread Man

We have been reading The Gingerbread Man in English, looking at recipes and writing shopping lists for ingredients. We used our shopping lists to buy the ingredients to make our own gingerbread men and they were delicious and luckily they didn't run away!

We started this half term with an 'Art Day'. Our focus of the day was to make a piece of art work for the Climate Unity Project 2022 to be displayed at Southampton City Art Gallery. We started the day discussing the importance for us to make changes so that we can help tackle climate change. We watched 'Whoopi Goldberg's Dramatic Call for Climate Action' and we discussed what is happening on our earth because of climate change and what we could do about it. Mrs Appleby gave us the task to come up with a design which could become a collage which would be displayed inside a recycled bicycle wheel. Then we each decided what we felt was important. There were many great ideas, including designs about deforestation, polluting the seas and using different forms of transport to travel which don't pollute the air. We then got into groups based on our designs and as a group drew our ideas onto circular card and then collaged them. Miss Lilly and Mrs Appleby were proud of their brilliant team working skills and the fantastic art work they have produced. We will let you know when you will be able to visit Southampton City Art Gallery to view the art work they have done.
