Phonics
Here at Lockerely Primary School we are passionate about teaching phonics lessons that appeal and engage all learners through fun activities. We follow a fantastic scheme called Twinkl Phonics which aims to accelerate children's learning in reading. Rather than relying on rote learning, Twinkl promotes understanding, which leads to children becoming confident, independent learners. Confidence builds their passion for school and for life. The scheme offers a range of fun games and a multi-sensory experiences to help children learn. It recognises that children learn differently, so uses multiple ways of learning to provide different memory cues. This helps children remember words as they have multiple ways to recall information. Songs, games and videos add to this multisensory learning experience.
When children first join us we recap level 1 phonics which has been covered at nursery before moving onto level 2. During the spring term we complete level 3 and summer term covers level 4. Whilst level 4 does not teach new sounds it provides children with skills to write each letter, usually using the correct formation.
