Spring 1

To finish our Art Topic of collage, we created our own animals inspired by 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?' by Eric Carle.

Another exciting day for Admirals Class as we welcomed another visitor - Special Chief Inspector Tavender! He explained how the police help us and keep us all safe. We were excited to try on police uniforms (some were a bit big!) and Skippers joined us to look at his police car.

We enjoyed a really fun (and busy!) school trip to Romsey. We were given train tickets at Romsey station, and walked from there to Romsey Abbey. Rob gave us a tour of the Abbey, including showing us the Florence Nightingale stained glass window, and letting us try on some nun/monk robes! Martin then kindly showed us how the organ works - it was amazing how long the pipes were! We had lunch at Romsey Abbey Primary School, then returned to the train station. John upgraded us to First Class seats, and we enjoyed a journey around Southampton before returning to Romsey station. We even got a special train announcement. We enjoyed meeting so many people who helped us!

We have been exploring our Florence Nightingale History Box. We learned a lot about what life was like for her including what she wore, how she would have travelled and looked in her medicine case. We also thought about how difficult it must have been to keep clean, and how grateful we are for modern luxuries like toothpaste!

We have been learning about special foods in different religions in R.E. We talked about Christian Holy Communion - Vicar James kindly gave us some wafers to try (with grape juice instead of wine!) We learned about what the bread and wine represent and why this is important to Christians. We also learned about the Jewish special meal of Shabbat, and tried some Challah bread.  We talked about how these celebrations are similar and different, and continued our learning in Discovery Time.

Thank you to Dr Williams for visiting us and telling us what it means to be a doctor in a hospital. We enjoyed learning about a stethoscope, and some of us made our own versions in Discovery Time!

Admirals Class visited Emperors Class to teach them about different animals. We have been learning about what animals eat, and different types of vertebrates, so we had lots of knowledge to share!

Admirals Class had a visit from Vicar James who brought some artefacts linked to Florence Nightingale from Wellow Church. He shared a story with us, and showed us her lamp which is lit in services linked to her life. He also talked to us about the symbols on his vestments that link to her achievements. Thank you Vicar James!

Admirals went on a walk around the village looking at human and physical features. They were very good at spotting whether something was human (man-made) or physical (natural). The purpose of this walk is to then compare the village with a town and city, when we head to Romsey and Southampton in a few weeks.

We are enjoying learning about different animals in Science. We have learned about five types of vertebrates (animals with spines): mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians. We have learned the features of each type of animal, and brought some in from home that we could describe!

We learned about collage in Art, and how to use different materials to build up texture in our art work. We worked together as a class to create a collage of Florence Nightingale, who will be learning about this half term.

Skippers and Admirals enjoyed Outdoor Learning. We had to use our listening skills to find our partners while we were blindfolded!

To start our 'Helpers at Hand' topic, we were really lucky to be visited by Helen, a vet with the RSPCA. She told us about her job and how she looks after the animals in her care. She explained about microchips and let us try and find out which cuddly dog had been microchipped. We also all got to try on some of her vet gloves...the 'cow gloves' were extremely long! A highlight was meeting two of her furry friends - Cinnamon and Pumpkin the guinea pigs!

We spent our first day back after the Christmas break continuing our longitudinal study of minibeasts in the school grounds. We worked in teams (joined by Skippers) to see what we could spot in the garden, on the playground and on the field.
