Autumn

Music

Swallowtails performed to family members and the rest of the school on keyboards. They played music they been learning since September, which included Beethoven Symphony No. 9 and Jingle Bells.

Science

Swallowtails enjoyed our investigation finding out what materials were soluble and which were insoluble. We discussed how we would make it a fair test and mixed the substances with cold water to see if they would dissolve. We then used a table to record our results.

Science

Swallowtails predicted what would happen when they placed skittles into a shallow tub and added water to it. They then conducted this experiment and loved to see the colour coating on each skittle dissolve to create colour patterns. Some children thought it was particularly interesting that the colours didn't mix and this was because each colour solution has slightly different properties.

RE

To begin our 'Inter Faith Week' we learnt about Vesak which is a Buddhist festival. During Vesak festival, they decorate their house and streets with paper lanterns so we created our own.

Outdoor Learning

We had lots of fun during outdoor learning whittling sticks to roast marshmallows with and then we learnt about fire safety and had a go at lighting our own fires.

History

Swallowtails enjoyed looking at Viking artefacts.  We discussed what  each artefact would have been used for and who it might have belonged to. Then we carefully sketched the artefacts and wrote down their use.

Science

We have started our new science unit 'Mixtures and Separating'. To begin this unit we were given a range of mixtures. We then tried to identify what substances we could see in them.

DT

Swallowtails are going to be making an Anglo-Saxon soup, made from vegetables that they would have grown at that time. As part of the planning process, the class tried a variety of different vegetable soups. They rated these on their appearance, texture, taste and smell. Swallowtails also tried to work out what vegetables were in the soup. They are very excited about using this information to plan and make their soup this week.

Science

Swallowtails have started their longitudinal study. The question we are investigating is, 'How do plants and trees change over time?' We thought about what we already knew about the season Autumn, we drew labelled diagrams of different trees and plants and measured the heights of plants and the size of leaves. We are looking forward to seeing the changes during the year.

Outdoor Learning

We enjoyed Outdoor Learning this afternoon. We learned how to whittle using peelers, and created wands, swords, pencils and leaf collectors! We also enjoyed playing in the autumn leaves.

Science

In science Swallowtails set up their own experiments to investigate liquid movement. We discussed how to make it a fair test, conducted the experiment and recorded our results. Then we compared our results, we found that water has a low viscosity (flows quickly) and that the tomato sauce and moisturiser has a high viscosity (flows slowly).

History - Butser Ancient Farm

Swallowtails enjoyed a visit to Butser Ancient Farm. We found out lots of information about Saxon life and got to experience what living in a Saxon home would have been like. We also had a guided tour of the Saxon and Roman areas of the farm. During the day we also took part in different activities: using quills and ink to write Saxon runes (an alphabet they used in their native writing system), created sewing runes and made chalk carvings using flints.

History

We have had fun this week looking at different clues to work out the reasons why the Anglo-Saxons invaded.

Music

This year Swallowtails are having weekly music lessons taught by Hampshire Music Service. This term they are learning to play the keyboard.

Outdoor Learning

Swallowtails had lots of fun in their first outdoor learning session creating portraits of themselves using natural materials.
